The only thing better than stepping into a sauna is stepping into one after a bracing cold swim.

Perhaps not a definitive statement, but we’re of the opinion that the reward of heat is best earned through chill. That first blast of warmth after a plunge? Magic. And thankfully, the UK has no shortage of beautifully considered spots for just that. These are some of our favourite sauna escapes — places where the air is hot, the water is cold, and the welcome is always warm.

1. Arc, Canary Wharf

A recent arrival to east London, Arc is everything we love in a modern sauna space — beautiful, intentional design, natural materials, and a focus on ritual. Beyond the sunken seating area is a 65-person sauna and 8 cold plunge baths, all set at varying temperatures. You can do a free flow session and go at your own pace, or be guided by one of their instructors - great for beginners looking to get into contrast therapy. The cherry on top? Heavenly scents (calming lavender, juicy orange, invigorating eucalyptus) thrown on the coals and a traditional towel waving experience in every session.

2. Peckham Community Sauna, London

This one’s more low-key, but that’s part of the charm. Tucked away by the Peckham Rye Lido, this community-run sauna is welcoming, no-fuss, and just the right amount of DIY. It draws a local crowd, so don’t be surprised if you strike up a chat mid-session or end up heading for a coffee after. There's a certain magic in its laid-back energy — less ceremony, more connection. It’s ideal if you like your heat served with a slice of neighbourhood mentality.

3. Margate Community Sauna

Right on the beach and totally free, it’s hard not to love what Margate’s Community Sauna is doing. Set up to be open and accessible for all, it embodies the spirit of generosity inherent in sauna culture. Expect sea views, salty skin, and a communal atmosphere that feels restorative in every sense. No frills, no fuss, just honest heat and cold. We recommend wrapping up in something cosy post-sauna and catching the sunset from the steps.

4. Kiln, Cornwall

This is the one to travel for. Kiln feels like a full reset, nestled on the Cornish coast, with locations on Gylly Beach in Falmouth and close by in the tranquil village of Flushing. The views from the sauna are almost cinematic, especially if you manage to catch it during a stormy sky. The big front window has often been referred to as harbour tv. Sessions here have a quiet reverence to them, inviting you to slow down and take it all in. There’s also plenty of opportunities to take part in various sauna rituals, which are longer sessions taking inspiration from Scandinavian and Eastern European sauna practices. Think towel waving, aromatic branch tapping and hopeful group affirmations.

5. Wildwater Sauna, Pembrokeshire

Tucked into a quiet cove, Wildwater feels like a secret shared among friends. The setting is pure coastal charm — think craggy rocks, seaweed-strewn shores, and the occasional curious seal. This one feels especially good after a chilly swim (we recommend the early morning dip, if you’re brave). The sauna itself is simple, beautifully made, and always full of good energy. Wildwater is one of those places you plan to visit once and then immediately start planning your return to.
